Michlaude Discipleship Project

Series Preface

The Progression of the Volumes

Volume I gave the disciple their identity in the battle. Volume II gave them the King they were following. Volume III handed them the field manual for the most important theological conversation of the current civilizational moment — the conversation with the Muslim, conducted not from a defensive posture but from a methodological one. Don't defend. Test.

Volume IV takes the same spine into different territory.

The Muslim has a God, a scripture, a prophet, a moral framework, a judgment to come, and a deep reverence for the Jesus he has been told is only a prophet. The conversation in Volume III could begin at the Quran's own Christology — because there was shared vocabulary, shared reverence, and a trail of evidence already embedded in the tradition that needed only to be followed.

The secular Western mind — the agnostic and the atheist — begins further back. Not at the divergence between two theological frameworks. At the question of whether any framework is warranted at all. Not "which God?" but "why God?" Not "whose scripture?" but "why should any ancient text carry authority over a modern mind?" Not "how is Jesus more than a prophet?" but "why does it matter who Jesus was?"

The conversation therefore starts at the foundations. And the method is the same: don't defend, test. Whatever standard of evidence and reason the secular mind claims to value — apply it consistently. Apply it to the claim that God does not exist. Apply it to the claim that God cannot be known. Apply it to the claim that matter is self-sufficient, that consciousness is a byproduct of neurons, that the Moral Law is a cultural artifact, that the universe wound itself up.

The secular mind, in the disciple's experience, is not usually hostile. It is usually comfortable. And comfort — as the Adversary's second confession will reveal — is his laziest and most effective strategy. Not a gold cage this time. Just an empty room with very good lighting and no windows. And a persistent background noise that prevents the occupant from hearing the one voice that has been speaking since before the world began.

The disciple's job in Volume IV is to help the room go quiet.
