Chapter Four

Staying Poor

You are sitting at your desk at 9:14 am. The morning is quiet for the first time today. Last night, alone in the bedroom, you did not do the thing you usually do. You read a few chapters of something good, you prayed a short prayer, you went to sleep. You woke up feeling clear in a way you have not felt in a while. Now the clarity is starting to feel like strength. Your mind is already writing a story about how you turned a corner. This is the present, and this is where staying needy gets tested, not in the failure, but in the relief.

We turn neediness into a story we tell about our conversion, and then we try to live from competence. That is not what Jesus calls blessed.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them." — Matthew 5:3 (NET)

The verb is present. The kingdom belongs to the poor in spirit now, not to those who remember being poor in spirit once. If you are not needy now, you are not in the kingdom now, no matter what you remember.

The temptation after a clean night is to assume the next one will take care of itself. Relief feels like fuel. You start to trust the relief instead of the Person who met you in the need. A week from now you are back in the same pattern, not because the temptation got stronger, but because you left neediness. You traded remaining for remembering.

Jesus makes this unavoidable in plain images. Apart from me you can accomplish nothing. Nothing includes five minutes of purity after a good week, one honest conversation at work, a single act of patience with your child. You do not have the resource in yourself for the next decision. That is not an insult. That is how you were made.

Staying needy looks like asking the Brother Lawrence question in the relief as much as in the crisis. Father, what do You want from me in this moment? The morning after a clean night is a different test than 10:47 pm, but it is still a test. The clean night did not change who you are. It did not eliminate the urge. It is one small refusal in a long obedience. The relief is real and it is a gift. It is not a graduation.

This is where people get tripped. They make it through a week, feel proud, lower the guard, and a month later they are back in the counterfeit and they wonder what went wrong. Nothing went wrong with the clean week. They simply stopped remaining. They started managing their progress instead of remaining in the vine that produced it.

Remaining is not a crisis moment. Remaining is staying. Staying is not passive. Staying is the active choice in this minute to stay where you are already known, instead of reaching for the knowing that cannot know you back. The branch does not generate sap by trying harder. It bears fruit by staying connected.

Staying needy is not nostalgia for neediness. It is neediness now. It is asking what God wants from you in this moment now. It is turning toward the Father and the Son now. It is remaining now. The moment you leave neediness, even for a minute, you reach for a counterfeit. The moment you stay needy, even for a minute, you are living in the life Jesus defined.

See what that looks like in the next hour. It is 10:22 am now. The relief from last week is still warm. You have answered two emails and the morning feels competent. Your phone is within reach. A notification lights up — not temptation, just distraction — and your hand moves toward it without thinking. This is the moment. Not 10:47 pm. Not a crisis. Just a quiet Tuesday morning when relief has quietly become self-reliance and you are already, without noticing it, living from yourself rather than from the vine. Staying poor means catching it here, at 10:22 am, before the drift becomes a decision. Father, I have nothing here. Keep me in You now. That is the prayer. That is the return. Not dramatic. Just present.

You are at your desk. The relief is still warm from last week. The next decision is in front of you. Do not live from the memory. Live from the vine. Ask what He wants in this minute. Stay where you are known.

Stay poor. Remain.
