Chapter Eleven
The Loneliness
You are in your living room at 9:22 pm. The house is quiet. Everyone else is asleep, or you live alone and there is no one else. The lights are low. You have scrolled through your phone for twenty minutes without finding anything worth your attention. The quiet turns heavy. You feel the ache that you usually name as boredom, but it is deeper than boredom. It is loneliness, and it is asking to be filled right now.
Porn promises to fill loneliness without requiring presence. It offers the illusion of company without the risk of being known. The problem is not that you feel lonely. The problem is that you leave the place where real company is given in order to chase a counterfeit. Eternal life is not a future reward for enduring loneliness. Eternal life is present knowing that meets you in loneliness tonight.
Jesus spoke directly to the orphan feeling in your chest.
"I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you." — John 14:18 (NET)
He did not say you will not feel alone. He said He will come to you in the feeling. He comes not as an idea, but as a Person who remains with you in the present. Remaining is how you receive His coming, not by trying harder, but by staying where He is.
The Father gives the same promise in plain words.
"I will never leave you and I will never abandon you." — Hebrews 13:5 (NET)
Contentment is not pretending you do not feel alone. Contentment is staying with the One who will never leave, in this minute, and letting His presence be enough for this minute.
David knew the dark valley of aloneness and the Shepherd who meets us there.
"Even when I must walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff reassure me." — Psalm 23:4 (NET)
The valley is real. The darkness is real. The with me is more real. The rod and staff are not feelings. They are the present care of a Person who stays.
Loneliness tempts you to leave the vine to find company elsewhere. The vine is the only place where the company you actually need is given. Apart from me you can accomplish nothing includes surviving a lonely night without hiding. You do not manufacture that capacity in yourself. You receive it by staying connected.
Practices for loneliness are not ways to distract yourself. They are ways to stay present to the One who is present to you. Put the phone across the room or in the kitchen. Sit in the quiet for two minutes and tell the Father the truth. I feel alone right now and I am reaching for the wrong thing. What do You want from me in this hour? That is not a technique to make loneliness go away. That is remaining out loud in the place where He meets you. The loneliness may not go away. The presence is still real.
Loneliness also calls you to mercy toward others who are alone. When you remain in the love of God in your loneliness, you become able to notice the loneliness of someone else tomorrow without needing them to fill you. Call your mother in the morning. Send a message to a friend you have not talked to in a year. Show up at the church meeting you have been skipping. None of those things will fix tonight. All of them are part of how the long repentance reorients you toward people instead of images.
You will be tempted to turn loneliness into an identity. You will tell yourself you are the kind of person who will always be alone, that no one understands, that the counterfeit is the only comfort you have. That is a lie. The kingdom belongs to the poor in spirit now, at 9:22 pm, in the quiet house.
You are in your living room at 9:22 pm. The house is quiet. The ache is real. The vine is nearer than the ache. The One who will never leave you is here.
Stay with Him now. Pray a short prayer now. Remain in the loneliness now.
