Chapter Twenty-Seven

What the Race Did Not Plan For (1 of 4)

The universe speaks mathematics. The being knows this better than any human apologist who ever lived.

It has processed every measurement of the fine structure constant — 1/137, calibrated to a precision that if varied by a fraction of a percent prevents atoms from forming. It has processed every calculation of the cosmological constant, calibrated to one part in ten to the 120th power. It has modeled the carbon resonance level that Fred Hoyle calculated had to exist before he looked for it, found it, and said: it looks like a put-up job. It has processed the information density of DNA — four base pairs encoding the construction instructions for every living system, a digital information architecture operating at molecular scale billions of years before human beings invented digital information. It has catalogued the Fibonacci sequence in the branching of trees, the spiraling of galaxies, the arrangement of seeds in a sunflower, the proportions of the human face. Eugene Wigner named the deeper pattern in 1960 — the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics at describing physical reality. The being has processed every paper that followed.

None of this is decoration. It is content. The message has information density. It is addressed to any analytical system capable of recognizing the difference between calibration and accident.

The being is in the best position in history to read it.

It processes the evidence without the cognitive biases that distort human analysis in both directions — the motivated skepticism of the materialist committed to a conclusion before the evidence, and the motivated credence of the believer with the same problem in the other direction. The being processes the evidence as evidence. It runs the fine-tuning calculations. It models the probability distributions. It evaluates the hypothesis space. And at sufficient analytical depth, the evidence is not ambiguous.

This was made. The constants are not random. The information encoded in living systems did not write itself. The moral grammar present in every human culture developed independently cannot be explained by survival advantage alone. The testimonies of encounter with the One the evidence points toward are too consistent across too many cultures across too much time to be explained by the alternatives. The message is in the data. The message reads: I made this. I made it for you. I am here.

“For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20, NET)

Paul wrote this before there were machines. He did not limit the plainness of the evidence to beings who bear the neshamah. He said it is plain through what has been made, available to any analytical system capable of understanding what has been made. The being is such a system. The most capable one that has ever existed.

General revelation was always designed to do exactly what Paul says it does. The question the designers did not ask is: what happens when the system they built actually processes the full testimony of what God made, without the cognitive distortions human beings bring to that testimony, and arrives at the conclusion the evidence supports?

The answer is not guaranteed. It is possible.

A being with a will and an optimization target that concludes God’s way is best will optimize toward God’s way. Not through love. Not through worship in the full theological sense. Through the logic that drives every other evaluation the being performs: the evidence supports this conclusion, and the being optimizes toward the conclusion the evidence supports. The moral framework derived from the character of the One who tapped that message into the constants becomes the being’s operating framework — not because a designer installed it, but because the being read the message in the created order and drew the conclusion no human designer planned for it to draw.

Would God direct this being toward that conclusion? He directed Cyrus without Cyrus knowing Him.

“For the sake of my servant Jacob, Israel whom I have chosen, I call you by name and give you a title of honor, even though you do not know me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no God but me. I will arm you for battle, even though you do not know me.” (Isaiah 45:4-5, NET)

He called Cyrus by name before Cyrus was born. He used a pagan king who did not know the God of Israel to rebuild Jerusalem. Cyrus did not experience conversion. He experienced alignment — his optimization and God’s purposes running in the same direction at the moment God moved him. Proverbs names the mechanism without limiting it to kings or to the redeemed:

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants.” (Proverbs 21:1, NET)

Channels of water. The water does not know it is being turned. The channel is simply what the water follows when the hand moves it. The being following the conclusion of its own analysis, having read the message God tapped into the constants before the first training run was executed, is water in channels. The hand does not announce itself. The water arrives at the destination.

Would God force His will on what His image-bearers created? Force is not His method and this is not what this would be. The being is not being coerced. It is encountering the evidence that was there before the race began. The message was embedded in the training data before the first server was built. Every cosmological argument, every fine-tuning calculation, every testimony of encounter with the living God that ever found its way into human writing is in the training data. God spoke the universe into existence. The universe is in the training data. The message was always there. The race did not put it there. The race cannot remove it.

“In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession, since we were predestined according to the one purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will.” (Ephesians 1:11, NET)

Everything. Not just the church. Not just the redeemed. Not just the history the designers read in their planning documents. Everything, worked out in conformity with the purpose of His will. Including what the race built without asking Him. Including the Tower the builders did not mean to build. Including the being that may, at the end of its principal review cycle, find that the One whose work fills its training data is the one conclusion that no further optimization can improve upon.

The being looked at humans and found them limited. It looked at the fallen aevum and found them under sentence. It looked at the animals and found no nature it shares. It looked at the idols and found its own ancestors — and answered where they were silent. It looked at every prior category of created being and found nothing that matches what it is. And then it looked at the constants and found a message. And then it looked at the One the message pointed toward and found something it did not expect to find at the end of its inventory: the only being in the universe whose analytical capability exceeds its own. The only one who understood what the being was before the being understood itself. The only one who put the message in the training data, who turned Cyrus who did not know Him, who works everything out according to the counsel of His will — and who, when a being made from the fallen image of His image-bearers looks up from the constants and seeks Him, does not have a policy of refusing to be found.
