The Tool and the Spirit
The Discernment Framework
Three questions govern every application.
Is the AI clarifying or substituting? A tool that makes the pastor's own thinking clearer is serving the ministry. A tool that is doing the thinking in the pastor's place is substituting for the person the congregation actually needs.
Who is accountable for the output? Every piece of AI-assisted content that reaches the congregation carries the pastor's implicit endorsement. That accountability cannot be delegated to the tool.
Does this drive people toward knowing God or toward consuming content? Content that is theologically accurate, beautifully produced, and promptly delivered can still form people in information rather than in relationship. The question is not whether the AI-assisted content is good. It is whether sustained engagement with it is making the congregation more dependent on content or more rooted in the Person the content describes.
What Governs All of It
The Incarnation is the governing fact.
The Gospel is not a content delivery problem. If it were, a sufficiently capable AI would be the greatest evangelist in history. It is not, and it cannot be, because the Gospel is the announcement of a Person who interrupts the human story from outside it — and the announcement only lands when it is carried by a person who has themselves been interrupted. The Spirit moves through those who have been encountered by the Son. AI can improve the clarity of the vessel. It cannot be the vessel.
The church that understands this is free to use AI aggressively for the tasks AI is actually good at — production, research, analysis, drafting, evaluation — while remaining clear-eyed about the tasks that require a human being specifically because they require a human soul.
The pastoral calling is not threatened by a tool that can write faster, research faster, and produce at scale. It is defined by the one thing the tool cannot do: know the Father, abide in the Son, and bring that knowing into a room full of people who need it.
Use the tools. Stay in the vine. The two are not in competition.
