Part Four

The Three Levels

If you have built your faith around this reading, examining the beam feels like risking the house. That is an honest description of what the next few pages will ask of you, and it deserves to be named before you arrive there.

There are three levels to the structure, and they are not equally visible.

The first level is the visible claim: the earth is around six thousand years old. This is the conclusion everyone can see. The evidential arguments — mitochondrial DNA, maximum-age dating methods, the genealogies — all sit at this level. This is the level at which most debates happen. It is not the level where the work needs to be done.

The second level is the exegetical joist that holds the first level up: "die" in Genesis 2:17 means biological death, therefore no biological death occurred before the fall. This is the interpretive load-bearer. If this joist holds, the first level can stand. If this joist fails, the first level has no foundation in the text.

The third level is the foundation beneath the joist: the equation of trusting God with accepting young-earth creationism. This is the level that makes the framework immune to examination. It is invisible precisely because it has been sunk below the surface — it is not stated as a conclusion but assumed as a starting point. It feels like faith. It functions like a closed system.

Most of the conversation about young-earth creationism happens at Level One. Arguments about radiometric dating, about the fossil record, about the age of starlight — these are all Level One arguments. They will not move anyone whose framework is anchored at Level Three. You can win every argument at Level One and accomplish nothing, because the person has not been asked to examine the assumption that makes the Level One arguments feel like attacks on God rather than questions about geology.

The only productive conversation happens at Level Two. Not the science. The exegesis. Specifically: what does "die" mean in Genesis 2:17? That is the joist. That is the question.
