Part Nine
The Invitation
There is nothing complicated to say here. The map has been drawn. The territory is real. The path is clear.
Eternal life is the present-tense relational knowing of the Father and the Son. It is available now. Not after death. Not after a period of preparation. Not after the production of a sufficient quantity of virtue or sincerity or correct doctrine. Now. To anyone who turns toward it in poverty of spirit — in the genuine, unperformed posture of the soul with empty hands before the Creator.
What was accomplished on Saturday made the path open. The gates that were closed have been breached from within. The one who holds the keys is the one who descended into the condition of separation and came back out on Sunday morning. The relational knowing that Adam lost on the day he ate has been restored — not automatically, not universally, but genuinely and completely for every person who receives it in poverty of spirit.
The receiving does not require a formula. It does not require a specific location or a specific set of words or a specific emotional experience. It requires the orientation of the soul toward the living God in the posture of the one who has nothing to bring. That orientation is what John 17:3 describes as eternal life. It is what Matthew 5:3 says the kingdom belongs to. It is what the man in the parking lot was doing when he finally got out of the car — not because he had resolved anything, but because he received.
The people in your life are on one of two paths. You are on one of two paths. The outcomes are different and they are permanent. And the path that leads to life is as open as it has ever been, because the one who opened it is alive, because Sunday came after Saturday, because the empty tomb is the proof of what was accomplished in the dark on the day the world went about its business.
In the last chapter, we go back to the warm morning.
