Part Two: Who He Is

Chapter Three: Already There (2 of 2)

But presence is not the whole of His purpose. He has not moved in merely to keep you company. He has moved in to make you like Christ.

"Because those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son." — Romans 8:29 (NET)

That is the Spirit's real work in each person: the patient, lifelong shaping of a soul into conformity with the example of Christ. Every conviction that stings, every comfort that steadies, every prompting toward forgiveness you did not want to extend — all of it is the sculptor's hand, working toward the image of the Son.

And He does not work alone. Jesus drew the whole picture in a single image the night before He died: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, so that it will bear more fruit (John 15:1-2). The Spirit shapes from within; the Father prunes from without — cutting away, sometimes painfully, the things that lead toward death: the habit, the ambition, the grudge, the comfort that was quietly killing you. The two works are one work. The shaping and the pruning together cause the branch to bear more fruit. If you have ever felt both held and cut in the same season of life, you were not imagining it. That is what it feels like to be a branch in good hands.

Paul names the same work from the inside in Romans 8:13: if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Notice the agency. The Spirit is not the passive background to your moral effort. He is the active power by which the dying is possible. The deeds of the body do not yield to willpower — they have been tested against willpower across every generation and willpower loses. They yield to the Spirit, who is stronger than what opposes Him, and who has taken up permanent residence in exactly the place where the battle is being fought. The Companion who comforts is the same Companion who puts to death. That is not a contradiction; it is the full shape of His love. A friend who only comforts and never helps you become what you are meant to be is not a friend at full strength. The Spirit is both — the One who steadies you and the One who, with your cooperation, kills what is killing you.

Hudson Taylor, the English missionary who founded the China Inland Mission, learned this the long way. For years he strove — reaching, pressing, agonizing for a fullness that always seemed one effort away. Then in 1869 a friend's letter broke the lock: not a striving but a resting; not achieving the faith but looking to the Faithful One. I looked to Jesus, Taylor wrote, and when I saw — oh how the joy flowed. He had not arrived anywhere. He had noticed where he already was. The Companion had been there through every strained and joyless year, waiting to be looked at.

So the first truth, before any other: He is already there. He was there before you understood. He will be there when you are too tired to reach. Your awareness does not increase His presence; He is constant. What awareness changes is you — your capacity to receive what He is always already giving. The practice is not access. The practice is noticing.
