Chapter Four
The Root (2 of 2)
This is not a personality critique. It is a spiritual diagnosis. The tradition has become what traditions always become when they are no longer subordinate to the Text: a substitute for the knowing it was meant to serve.
Social media makes this worse. When every post you see confirms your tradition, when the algorithm has successfully surrounded you with people who agree with you, when challenging content never reaches your feed because you have been conditioned to engage only with what confirms what you already believe — you become more certain over time, not because you have examined the tradition more thoroughly but because you have examined it less. The echo chamber is the pride mechanism in digital form. It feels like conviction. It functions as insulation.
What the Adversary Actually Fears
Here is the thing that reframes this entire document. The adversary does not fear your correct theology. he does not fear your position on the age of the earth, your eschatological timeline, or your view of the atonement. he does not fear your counter-argument to the tradition or your mastery of the cases named in Chapter Three. A person can be completely right about all of that and still be spiritually adrift.
What he fears is the branch that remains in the vine.
he does not need you to lose the argument over tradition. he only needs you engaged in the argument instead of in the knowing. Every hour spent defending the young earth tradition against astronomy is an hour not spent abiding. Every news cycle decoded as prophetic confirmation is attention redirected away from the Person whose return you claim to anticipate. he is not threatened by your information about his strategies. he is threatened by your relational connection to the One who defeated him.
"Now this is eternal life — that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You sent." — John 17:3 (NET)
Eternal life is relational knowing. Present tense. Now. The adversary cannot close that door. The cross sealed it open. But he can keep you from walking through it — not by destroying your faith, but by keeping you occupied with defending the tradition rather than deepening the knowing. Information without abiding is the condition he finds most manageable. So is the flattened believe — assent without entrusting — because it inoculates a person against the real thing while convincing them they already have it. he does not need you to stop believing. he needs your believing to stay a noun. You can be correct about every case in Chapter Three and still be exactly where he wants you if that correctness is your occupation rather than your means back to John 15.
This document is not ultimately about winning the argument over Sola Scriptura. It is about what the argument is costing you. Pride in tradition does not just put words in God's mouth. It pulls you out of the vine while you are standing in church defending Scripture. And that is the adversary's preferred outcome — not your defeat, but your distraction.
Every system on this list that promises removal from suffering — the pre-trib chart, the prosperity formula — is, at root, a mechanism for avoiding what Paul called the fellowship of Christ's sufferings. The branch that remains in the vine is not removed from tribulation. It is sustained through it.
The Reformers came to the Text without requiring it to confirm what the tradition said it meant. When the Text overturned what the institution required, they followed the Text. They were not defending a position. They were submitting to one. That submission is what poverty of spirit produces when applied to Bible study. You come to find out what the Text actually says — not to confirm what you already know it says. You hold the tradition as a tool. You let the Text hold the authority.
That is what Sola Scriptura requires from you. Not only in the direction of the Church of Rome. Not only toward traditions you have not inherited. Toward yours.
