Pride in Tradition at the Expense of Scripture
Appendix: Reference Notes (2 of 5)
The Aged John Account. The account of the elderly apostle John repeating "Little children, love one another" at Ephesus is recorded by Jerome in his Commentary on Galatians (on Galatians 6:10), late 4th century. It is a patristic tradition, not Scripture, and is presented in this book as exactly that.
Scripture References All Scripture quotations are from the NET Bible, Second Edition. Scripture appears throughout as italicized blockquotes with the citation on its own line. The NET Bible is the translation standard of the Michlaude Discipleship Project.
The Public Exchanges Referenced The exchanges described in Chapter Three occurred across multiple public posts in multiple public Facebook groups during June 2026. Participants are identified by first name only — Rich, Vanessa, John, Russ, Graham, Richard, and Robert — because the subject of this book is the pattern, not the person, and every one of them is a brother for whom Christ prayed. All were writing in groups open to any Facebook user or on public pages and walls. No private communications are quoted or referenced.
Socratic Questions for Personal Examination These questions are not designed to be answered quickly. They are designed to be sat with. Each block addresses a specific tradition from Chapter Three, with a final block for the living instance addressed in Chapter Six. The measure is not whether you can construct an answer. The measure is what happens in you when you try. If the question produces irritation rather than inquiry, the diagnostic from Chapter Two is already running.
Young Earth Creationism
- Genesis 2:17 says God warned Adam he would die "in the day" he ate the fruit. Adam ate and lived another 930 years. If "die" in that verse means biological death, what does "in the day" mean — and whose interpretation resolves that, yours or the Text?
- The young earth timeline rests on Archbishop Ussher's 1654 calculation, not on a statement in Scripture. Scripture never states an age for the creation. If a sincere believer reads the same Text and does not arrive at 6,000 years, are they denying Scripture — or are they denying Ussher?
- When a young person you love asks why stars billions of light-years away appear to exist if the universe is 6,000 years old, does your answer require them to distrust the instruments of physics — or does it require them to trust a reading of Genesis you have not fully examined?
- If a young person raised in your church encounters the light travel time problem in an astronomy class and concludes that the young earth position is not what Genesis actually requires — have they left their faith or have they left a tradition? How would you know which one?
- The serpent told Eve she would not die, and in a way he was right about her body — she did not drop dead that day. What he hid was the death that mattered: the break with God. If the tradition treats the body's death as the main thing God warned about, could it be letting the deeper death slip out of view the same way the serpent did?
- Ken Ham's own commissioned research found that young people were leaving the church during middle and high school — before they reached college and evolution. If the young earth tradition is protecting faith, what is producing this departure before the scientific confrontation even arrives?
Dispensationalism
- John Nelson Darby worked out the pre-tribulation rapture in the 1830s. Christians martyred by Rome, burned at the stake during the Reformation, killed in the Holocaust — none of them had this framework. What do you believe happened to their faith in the tribulation they faced without the chart that promised removal from it?
- Matthew 24:34 says "this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." What method do you use to determine that "this generation" means something other than the generation alive when Jesus spoke — and does that method apply to any other sentence in the Gospels, or only to this one?
- Your prophetic chart resolves every symbol in Revelation. When the next generation of interpreters applies the same method to their current events and arrives at different conclusions — as every previous generation has — what will distinguish their misreading from your correct reading?
- The dispensational framework requires Israel and the church to be two entirely separate peoples with separate destinies. Paul writes in Galatians 3:28–29 that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, and that those who belong to Christ are Abraham's offspring. How does the two-peoples architecture accommodate this text — and was that accommodation made before or after Darby built the framework?
- If the chart is the interpretive key to current events, and every generation has applied it to their current events and been wrong about the timing, what would it look like for you to be wrong? What would have to happen for you to reconsider?
- The Scofield Reference Bible put Darby's framework in the margins alongside the biblical text. When you read Matthew 24, do you see what the text says — or do you see what the margin already told you it means before you reached the verse?
- In Matthew 23:36 — one chapter before the Olivet Discourse, in the same conversation, to the same audience — Jesus says this generation will be held responsible for all the righteous blood from Abel to Zechariah. In that verse, does "this generation" mean the people He is speaking to, or a generation two thousand years later? If it means His audience there — and no one disputes that it does — what changed between chapter 23 and chapter 24 that would make the identical phrase, in the identical context of coming judgment, mean something completely different?
Christian Nationalism
- Jesus was offered the political kingdom four times and declined it every time. When the church pursues political power in His name, which of His four refusals does it believe no longer applies — and where is that exception in the Text?
- If you believe the state should be organized by biblical principles because Christianity is true, and a Muslim-majority nation believes the state should be organized by Sharia because Islam is true, what principle distinguishes your claim from theirs that does not reduce to "because mine is correct"?
- The person considering abortion frequently encounters condemnation before care. Jesus reached the person before He addressed the behavior. Which of these sequences does your engagement with this issue more closely resemble — and what would it cost you to change the order?
