then he said something that should stop every debate in its tracks. John 13:35 — by this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. not by this argument, not by this evidence, not by winning this thread. by love. the proof he commissioned was not intellectual. it was relational. a community of people whose love for each other cannot be explained by any natural hypothesis.

1 Peter 3:15 says be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in you — but notice the precondition. someone has to ask. and they only ask when the life raises the question. the argument responds to the question the life already created.

the arrow in the woods tells you a mind was at work. a changed life tells you that mind can be known. those are two very different claims and only one of them draws anyone through the door.

so how are you living in a way that raises questions your neighbors cannot answer on their own?

The He Touched Me comment:

i woke up this morning not knowing what the day would bring. but something was already there before i made a single decision — a song running in my head that i didn't choose, and a weight in my chest for the people in groups like this one.

the song was He Touched Me, written by Bill Gaither in 1963. it opens in a very specific place — a person shackled under a crushing weight of guilt and shame, burdened in a way that no argument can lift. that is where it starts. not with a proposition. with a condition.

then the touch comes. the hand of Jesus. and the person standing in that before is simply no longer the same. that's the whole hinge of the song — something happened. not something was explained, not something was proven. something happened, and the person who experienced it knows it from the inside in a way that cannot be argued away.

and then the song describes what follows. a joy that the person didn't manufacture. a wholeness they didn't achieve. and a response that has no end — praising the one who touched them while eternity itself rolls on. the before was heavy. the after is unbounded. not because the person became greater, but because they were touched by the one who is.

Gaither wrote it after watching people walk into a revival meeting heavy laden and walk out changed. he couldn't sleep that night. Elvis Presley heard it years later and chose it. a man who had everything the world offers chose that song. maybe because he recognized the before.

some of you in this thread may be living in a version of the before right now — not because you are bad people, but because the intellectual register is a safer place than the one the song starts from. the design argument can bring you to the doorstep. but it cannot do what the touch does.

have you ever felt the weight the song starts from?

The Ezekiel 47 comment:

there is a passage in the book of Ezekiel, chapter 47, that i came to this morning and want to leave you with. Ezekiel has a vision of water flowing from under the threshold of the temple, just a trickle at first. a man with a measuring line walks him out into it a thousand cubits at a time. ankle deep. then knee deep. then waist deep. then a river too wide and deep to cross, water to swim in.

the river hasn't changed. the source hasn't changed. what changes is how far in the person goes.

the design argument, the arrow in the woods, the mind behind the complexity, that is standing on the bank and correctly identifying that the river exists. that is real and it matters. but you can be completely right about the river and still be completely dry.

the He Touched Me arc i described earlier is the moment someone steps in. the weight they carried to the bank. the touch that changes everything. the joy that follows that they did not manufacture. that is ankle deep in Ezekiel's vision. and the invitation is to keep going.

in the vision the river flows toward the Dead Sea, the most hostile water in the landscape where nothing can live, and heals it. fresh water. fish. fruit trees on both banks. leaves for the healing of nations. that hasn't happened yet in the world we live in. but the direction of travel is the point. the river moves toward the most unlikely place. that is what it does.

i look at threads like this one the same way. not the most hospitable water. but that is where the river flows.

how far from the bank are you willing to go?

The Incarnation comment (reply to the whole thread):

there is one more step in this thread that nobody has taken yet and i want to try to take it.

Craig asked — show me the designer. the design argument answers that a mind exists behind the complexity. Wesley showed why that inference is sound. but here is what the argument itself tells you when you follow it all the way: if the maker made everything that exists, then he is outside everything that exists. you cannot reach outside the system by examining the inside of it. the logic of the design argument contains its own limit. it gets you to the bank and stops.

so the question becomes not can we find him, but did he come to us.

the answer is not in the design argument. it is in an event. the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John 1. not a conclusion we reasoned toward. not a theory we constructed. an interruption from outside the system, into the system, on his terms, not ours.

and when someone asked him directly — show us the Father — his answer was: anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. John 14:9.

don't let your analytical framework determine how that had to happen. it was his design, not ours. all of it. the creation that points to him, the word that describes him, the entrance into it that he chose. examining the wonder of creation is real and it matters. but it was never meant to be the whole thing. it was meant to make you ask the question that only the entrance can answer.

the maker came looking for you. that changes everything about the search.

Reply to Robert Jovanovitch (on the maker not being bound by time):

waiting? he isnt bound by time - he created that too.. the rest i am ok with.. he actually came down to us from a place that we cannot reach to of our own. he did that to restore our ability to 'walk' with him and abide in him - death - restored to life again for us. not arguing here i think - augmenting

Reply to CeleryKills (naming the method, posted before comments were closed):

CeleryKills, i read your two comments carefully, and then i read the pinned article on your page that lays out the method behind them. that changes how i should respond, and i want to be transparent about why.

your article is clear that the goal of these exchanges is not conversion but what you call structural weakening — making the other person's scaffolding wobble for the benefit of everyone watching. the moves are well chosen. never accept the burden. never explain, make them explain. demand definitions. demand falsification criteria. treat the absence of a clean falsifier as a structural kill. you executed all of it here at a high level. i am not being sarcastic. it is genuinely well built.
