Michlaude Discipleship Project

Before the Question

Notes on Sources

This book is a formation book, not an academic one. Sources are cited here to give readers a way to verify what the text asserts and to follow any of these threads further. Legal references in particular reflect the state of the law and litigation at time of publication and should be verified by readers in later years, as this landscape was actively shifting.

The Cass Review. The Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for Children and Young People was conducted by Dr. Hilary Cass and commissioned by NHS England. It was published in April 2024 after four years of independent systematic work. The full report is publicly available at cass.independent-review.uk. The book cites the review for its finding on social transition as a clinical rather than neutral intervention. The review studied UK clinical practice, not US school curricula, and that scope is noted in the text.

Gallup data. The figures on self-identification as transgender among adults aged 18 to 27 come from Gallup's annual survey data on LGBTQ+ identification in the United States, with the 2024 figures published in Gallup's annual report on LGBT identity. Gallup's published surveys are available at gallup.com. The book notes throughout that the cause of the rise is contested in the research literature; the fact of the rise is not.

Christian Smith / National Study of Youth and Religion. The research cited in Chapter Five comes from Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton's longitudinal National Study of Youth and Religion, with the core findings published in Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers (Oxford University Press, 2005) and follow-up volumes. The specific finding on parental faith conversation as the strongest predictor of adult religious faith is a consistent conclusion across the study's multiple waves. To be precise about what Smith establishes: that parental faith engagement predicts adult faith retention — not that Christian formation produces superior outcomes on independent psychological measures such as mental health or life satisfaction compared to other formation frameworks. This book cites Smith for the former claim only.

Amber Lavigne case. The facts described in Chapter Ten are drawn from public court filings—Lavigne v. Great Salt Bay Community School Board, No. 24-1509 (1st Cir. 2025)—and from news reporting in Maine Public, the Bangor Daily News, and national outlets. Lavigne's direct quotation is from her own public statements. The Supreme Court declined to hear her petition in March 2026. All details reflect public record as of that date.

Department of Education finding. The finding cited in Chapter Ten is the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights document titled "U.S. Department of Education Finds California Department of Education Violated Federal Law by Hiding Students' Gender Transitions from Parents," published January 2025. The 300-student figure for California Gender Support Plans comes from that finding and related news coverage. The finding is publicly available at ed.gov.

Aurora Regino case. The facts cited in Chapter Eleven are drawn from news reporting on Aurora Regino v. Chico Unified School District, with Regino's public statements sourced from her February 2023 interviews with Fox News. Her statement that her daughter now again identifies as female is from those public interviews.

Florida HB 1557. Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, House Bill 1557, was signed into law March 28, 2022, and subsequently amended. The bill is publicly available through the Florida Legislature's online portal. Readers in other states should verify current law in their jurisdiction, as this landscape continued to shift through 2024 and beyond.

Common Sense Media. The smartphone ownership figure cited in Chapter Five comes from Common Sense Media's 2023 report "The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens." The full report is available at commonsensemedia.org.
